Neck Swelling

Neck swelling refers to the presence of a lump, enlargement, or abnormal growth in the neck region. It may be caused by infections, thyroid problems, enlarged lymph nodes, cysts, or tumors. While some swellings are harmless and temporary, others may require medical evaluation to rule out serious conditions.

Symptoms:
  • Visible lump or swelling in the neck
  • Pain or tenderness in the area
  • Difficulty swallowing or breathing (in severe cases)
  • Fever or sore throat (if due to infection)
Causes:
  • Enlarged lymph nodes from infection
  • Thyroid enlargement or goiter
  • Cysts or congenital neck masses
  • Tumors (benign or malignant)
  • Post-injury or inflammatory changes
Treatments
  • Medication: Antibiotics or anti-inflammatory medicines if due to infection.
  • Drainage/Excision: For cysts or abscesses.
  • Surgery: Thyroid surgery, tumor removal, or biopsy depending on the cause.
  • Supportive Care: Pain relief, warm compress, and lifestyle advice where applicable.
Prevention
  • Maintain good oral and throat hygiene to reduce infections.
  • Get timely treatment for sore throat, tonsillitis, or dental infections.
  • Protect the neck from injuries.
  • Regular health check-ups for thyroid and ENT health.
