Foreign Body Removal

Foreign body removal refers to the safe extraction of objects that accidentally enter the ear, nose, or throat. This is commonly seen in children but can also occur in adults. If not treated promptly, it may cause pain, infection, breathing difficulty, or hearing loss.

Symptoms:
  • Sudden ear or nose pain
  • Blocked nose or ear
  • Difficulty swallowing or breathing
  • Discharge, foul smell, or bleeding from the ear or nose
  • Irritation, cough, or choking sensation
Causes:
  • Children inserting objects like beads, food, or toys into the ear/nose
  • Insects entering the ear canal
  • Accidental swallowing of food, bones, or small objects
Treatments
  • ENT specialists use special instruments or suction to safely remove the foreign body.
  • In some cases, minor procedures under local or general anesthesia may be required.
  • Immediate treatment prevents complications like infection, injury, or airway blockage.
Prevention
  • Keep small objects away from young children.
  • Teach children not to insert items into ears, nose, or mouth.
  • Use protective precautions while eating (especially fish/chicken with bones).
  • Seek prompt medical help instead of trying unsafe home removal methods.
