Csom (Chronic Suppurative Otitis Media)

Chronic Suppurative Otitis Media (CSOM) is a long-standing ear infection that leads to persistent discharge from the middle ear through a perforated eardrum. If untreated, it can result in hearing loss and other complications.

Symptoms and Causes
  • Continuous or recurrent ear discharge
  • Hearing impairment
  • Occasional ear pain or discomfort
  • Causes include untreated acute ear infections, repeated colds, poor ear hygiene, or eardrum injury.
Treatments
  • Medications – Antibiotic ear drops, oral antibiotics, and ear cleaning.
  • Surgical options – Tympanoplasty (eardrum repair) or mastoidectomy in advanced cases.
  • Hearing rehabilitation if significant hearing loss occurs.
Prevention
  • Treat acute ear infections promptly.
  • Avoid inserting objects or dirty water into the ear.
  • Maintain good nasal and throat health to prevent spread of infections.
  • Regular ENT check-ups if prone to ear problems.
