Asom (Acute Suppurative Otitis Media)

ASOM is an acute infection of the middle ear, usually following a cold or throat infection. It leads to fluid or pus build-up behind the eardrum, causing pain, fever, and sometimes ear discharge.

Symptoms and Causes
  • Severe ear pain, hearing loss, fever
  • Ear discharge (pus) in some cases
  • Irritability in children
  • Common causes: bacterial/viral infections, throat or nasal infections spreading to the ear.
Treatments
  • Antibiotics or antiviral medications
  • Pain relief and decongestants
  • In some cases, ear cleaning or drainage of fluid
  • Proper follow-up to avoid complications like chronic ear infection or hearing damage.
Prevention
